💡Verb dict. form + ために = purpose. Contrast 〜ように (less direct goal)
〜ようにSo that ~ (goal not fully in one's control)
締め切りに間に合うように、徹夜で作業した。
I worked through the night so that I could make the deadline.
💡Used when the goal depends on circumstances, not just will
〜をもってすればWith ~ / If it's ~ (expressing high ability)
彼の実力をもってすれば、この問題はすぐ解けるはずだ。
With his ability, he should be able to solve this problem quickly.
💡Expresses confidence in someone's exceptional capability
〜にしてはConsidering ~ / For ~ (surprising result)
子供にしては、そんな難しい漢字が読めるのは驚きだ。
For a child, it's surprising to be able to read such difficult kanji.
💡The result is better or worse than expected for that category
〜前にBefore ~ (doing something)
問題が深刻化する前に、早急な対策が必要だ。
Before the problem becomes more serious, urgent measures are needed.
💡Plain form verb + 前に = before the action occurs
〜としてAs ~ / In the capacity of ~
彼女は医者として、患者の話を親身に聞く。
As a doctor, she listens carefully to her patients.
💡Role, capacity, or identity. 〜としては adds nuance of 'given that role'
〜にあたってOn the occasion of / When doing ~ (careful preparation)
その計画を実施するにあたって、多くの問題があった。
When implementing the plan, there were many problems.
💡Formal; implies deliberate preparation for an important occasion
〜以上はNow that ~ / Since ~ (decision already made)
こんなに頑張った以上は、合格できないはずがない。
Now that I've worked this hard, there's no way I can't pass.
💡Expresses strong expectation based on an already-completed effort or decision
〜からにはNow that ~ / Since ~ (with obligation)
彼が反対するからには、きっと何か理由があるのだろう。
Since he is opposing it, there must be some reason.
💡Implies an obligation or expectation follows from the given situation
〜かどうかWhether or not ~
試験に合格できるかどうか、自信がない。
I'm not confident whether or not I can pass the exam.
💡〜か + どうか. Also: 〜かどうかわからない = I don't know whether ~
