Expressing Desire: 〜たい

Use 〜たい to express what you want to do. It attaches to the verb stem (the ます-stem).

Formation

verb stem + たい

食べます → 食べ + たい → 食べたい

行きます → 行き + たい → 行きたい

Positive Examples

Sushi wo tabetai.
I want to eat sushi.
Nihongo wo hanashitai.
I want to speak Japanese.
Nihon ni ikitai desu.
I want to go to Japan.
Atarashii hon wo kaitai.
I want to buy a new book.
Motto netai desu.
I want to sleep more.

Negative Form: 〜たくない

Sakana wo tabetakunai.
I don't want to eat fish.
Kyou wa hatarakitakunai desu.
I don't want to work today.

Past Form: 〜たかった

Eiga wo mitakatta.
I wanted to watch a movie.
Kodomo no koro, isha ni naritakatta.
When I was a child, I wanted to become a doctor.
