Japanese uses two different verbs to say something exists or is located somewhere. The choice depends on whether the subject is alive or not.
Tsukue no ue ni hon ga arimasu.
There is a book on the desk.
Kouen ni inu ga imasu.
There is a dog in the park.
Eki no chikaku ni konbini ga arimasu.
There is a convenience store near the station.
Ie ni neko ga sanbiki imasu.
There are 3 cats at home.
Reizouko no naka ni gyuunyuu ga arimasu.
There is milk in the refrigerator.
Toshokan ni gakusei ga takusan imasu.
There are many students in the library.
Isu no shita ni neko ga imasu.
There is a cat under the chair.
Ginkou no tonari ni resutoran ga arimasu.
There is a restaurant next to the bank.
